Mobile and Printing: What they have in common

It’s been said that the new and upcoming digital world is wreaking havoc on the printing one. While it’s true there have been some big changes, the print medium if anything, has adapted right along with them. Rather than looking at them as replacements for one another, seeing them as two pieces that can benefit from one another is what drives successful innovation.

So what does mobile have to do with print?

Take for instance the revamping of the QR code. In the past, these went relatively unnoticed past the point of check-out. Now, with the help of mobile technology, there has been a complete resurgence. Apple i-Phone users can simply point and tap using their regular cameras to scan and redeem these codes. As they’re printed, they direct users to special landing pages, videos, product details, the mobile app store, and even more - the possibilities are endless. According to results from Juniper Research, the number of QR coupons redeemed from mobile devices will reach 5.3 billion by the year 2022. Compare that to the 1.3 billion redemptions in the year 2017, and it is clear to see the effect that built-in QR functionality in smartphones can have on the entire printing industry.

Future Possibilities that combine Print and Mobile

Past QR codes, there are various capabilities print can accomplish entwined with mobile technology. Looking to the future, print could potentially create a flyer with the ability to be scanned by an augmented reality camera, or posters with 'Near Field Communications' that trigger cell-phone pop-ups and promos when nearby. The ability to turn static, print pieces into fully interactive and multi-platform reaching advertisements is revolutionary for the realm in which brands and customers interact. The integration between the two worlds of communication provides marketers and business leaders alike the ability to offer consumers a more holistic and satisfying experience.

Where print media is headed

Print is and will remain to be a great way of catching attention, building awareness and forging relationships with customers. As the mobile world continues to grow, the most important thing is that the print world does as well. Optimizing print and mobile with QR codes, Augmented Reality triggers, or Near Field Communications is a great way to further engage consumers while leading the way to further innovation.
